Overcoming Adversity with Character

As many of you know, Frazier & Deeter recently announced a partnership with an aspiring young PGA golfer, Ollie Schniederjans. Ollie and his family have had a close connection with Frazier & Deeter since he was a child. Ollie is a talented and driven young gentleman who also happens to have been the world’s number 1 amateur golfer for a record 41 weeks in a row.

Ollie is very driven to achieve his goals and after last week we are seeing the true character of the young man emerge as he deals with the disappointment of being tantalizingly close, yet not being able to take a next step in his process. As profiled in this late August Golf Channel article, Ollie came within one shot of qualifying for the Web.com Tour Finals, which would have given him a great shot to earn one of the coveted 25 PGA Tour cards.

First annual kickball tournament

A day in the life…

It was a Thursday afternoon, but we turned off our computers, put on our running shoes and headed to Piedmont Park for the first annual F&D Kickball Tournament and fall celebration.

The four teams had members of the audit, tax and operations departments. The players came from mid-town Atlanta, Alpharetta and even Nashville. While we expected the new hires to dominate the play the Partners were not to be outdone. Tax Partner Andy Burnett slid into second to start a four run inning that lead the blue team to a victory. On the red team, Audit Partner Shawn Fowler pitched two no-kick innings. Andrew Jeter and Bob Adams did their part to represent Nashville Audit’s kickball prowess. David Deeter, fresh from a client meeting, joined the crowds on the sidelines to cheer on our coworkers.

One Woman’s Perspective on Retaining Women CPAs

Studies show that women are entering CPA firms in record numbers. But what are the factors that will keep talented women in public accounting as strong, successful leaders?

The Bureau of Labor and Statistics predicts that the accounting profession is expected to grow faster through 2018 than any other profession currently tracked.  According to the AICPA, new CPAs are evenly split between men and women.  These statistics indicate that this is a time of tremendous opportunity not only for accountants, but specifically women in public accounting.

Additional statistics demonstrate that women CPAs have made progress over the past 25 years in terms of reaching high career levels within CPA firms.  In the late 1980s, women made up 26% of senior managers; by 2013, they comprised 43% of senior managers. While the number of women in leadership roles has increased, the profession has a long way to go to fully advance women CPAs.

FD in Philadelphia

The FD Fund Administration team recently got out of the office to celebrate joining Frazier & Deeter. We decided to go for bowling and a happy hour, a new F&D tradition!

Members of FD Fund Administration and Frazier & Deeter arrived at Lucky Strike to find an abundance of delicious pizza, wings and other bar snacks waiting.  After getting our bowling shoes on, it was time to see who had skills. Matt Regan of FD Fund Administration dominated, ringing the top score close to 200. Jeremy Sperring, CFO of Frazier & Deeter, tried to keep up with him, but realized quickly that Matt was out of his league.

Moving into our Second Year in Nashville

The Nashville Business Journal recently ran a story about Frazier & Deeter as an update one year after we merged with Work & Greer. The Business Journal’s story focused on our growth in terms of people, which at 53% has certainly been significant. But our team in Nashville is more than just a growth percentage. We thought it would be fun to look at the year in retrospect.

NashvilleMergers are inherently complex and this was no exception. The team in Nashville had to learn new software and processes. This was especially important in audit, given Frazier & Deeter’s procedures were developed by former members of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board. These rigorous processes have enabled F&D to consistently receive top ratings from the AICPA peer review and the PCAOB. Happily people from our Atlanta headquarters were excited to come to Nashville to help smooth the transition…and check out some Nashville institutions like Puckett’s and Robert’s. And Fireballs.
